Is Your Organization Thinking About Design Thinking?

Recognizing the importance of change and innovation has been a cornerstone of my professional career. At a time when an international pandemic has forced virtually all organizations to realize that the way we did things yesterday will have little bearing on our ability to succeed tomorrow.

The fourth industrial revolution is in motion and it is changing the way all organizations must approach their future. Linear thinking is being challenged today; a nonlinear approach to performance excellence will become the norm. Design-led, data-led strategy and transformation is becoming fundamental to future success.

Jeanne Liedtka’s 2018 comments in the Harvard Business Review almost exactly mirror my thoughts.She reminded all of us that “…design thinking has the potential to do for innovation exactly what TQM (Total Quality Management) did for manufacturing: unleash people’s full creative energies, win their commitment, and radically improve processes.”

The rationale behind her thinking is strong.
“To be successful, an innovation process must deliver three things:

  • superior solutions
  • lower risks and costs of change
  • and employee buy-in.”

This is why I wanted to share with you, 10 reasons your organization should embrace the design thinking process leading to AI-led strategy…today. I’m certain that you will regret not doing so.

    1. Real growth requires more than just nominal change. In today’s highly competitive world, your company has little choice but to continuously embrace innovation. Your competitors are already, and so are the ones you don’t even realize are sneaking up behind you. The good news: Design thinking will help effectively spur the innovation your organization is seeking. 
    2. Overwhelming challenges often appear overwhelming because of how we have traditionally approached them. Design thinking allows the problem or challenge to be addressed to be broken into smaller, more digestible pieces. That is significant as it encourages the kind of ideation that challenges the status quo.
    3. Design thinking is a human-centered process in an increasingly digital world. It is easy to ignore or place low prioritization on the human element of your business. But the people are the foundation of why your organization exists in the first place. Engaging in design thinking ensures that the people element is part is included.
    4. Empathy plays a critical role because the entire process is designed to improve their experience, not yours. Design thinking begins with the participants endeavoring to understand the problem through the eyes of others. Without design thinking, all too often, how your users actually feel when interacting with your products, services or interfaces, is not even considered.
    5. Participants in your design thinking process will feel unleashed. The ideation stage of design thinking is built on the realization that all ideas have value. Creativity is encouraged as ideas, perspectives and reactions are what drive the design thinking process. Everyone asked to participate will see it as a privilege.
    6. Those engaged in design thinking will naturally take ownership of their input. And ownership matters. Participants can’t help but recognize and appreciate the responsibilities associated with being asked to be part of this critical process.
    7. Cross collaboration is guaranteed. It’s critical you gather all the right stakeholders in every facet of the challenge or solution you are seeking to solve, to participate. Diverse voices ultimately yield better, more implementable solutions.
    8. Experimentation is invaluable. The prototyping and testing stages of design thinking will allow your team to test its ideas and/or designs before investing time and money into actually developing them. How can that not be important?
    9. Participants will refine, tweak, adjust and start over. And that’s important. Why? Because effective design thinking is intended to be iterative and nonlinear. In the end, design thinking produces the type of innovative change that will set your organization apart.
    10. The design thinking process will naturally help re-energize the culture of your organization. Never has that been more important. We often talk about the impact of employees feeling marginalized in today’s digital business environment. Design thinking is built on the human element behind effective change. That is especially gratifying in a world quickly becoming totally consumed by data.
